Story

During visits to construction sites, Marcello Pozzi often noticed the plywood used for concrete formworks perfectly finished in dark brown fenolic resin on both sides. He was fascinated by the idea of taking this raw material and transforming it into a finished product. He saw beauty and function in the plywood’s natural qualities.
Since the 1920s, the technology of bent plywood has characterized modern design. In contrast, Stack50 uses the material in the simplest way: “we used the plywood for what it is, without bending it”.
“This rough material with its essence and purity achieves a new aesthetic value. The sculptural quality of the table becomes a mere consequence.”
In the Stack50 Table, a single steel rod connects fifty plywood discs between a recessed steel plate on the tabletop and a sunken bolted plate on the bottom. The table stands because of the tension and compression of its structural elements. Stack 50 taunts gravity by shifting each disc away from the rod’s axis. The cumulative effect rewards us with the unexpected—an intriguing profile.
“I wanted to create a table with a structure that works differently from the typical table. I was drawn to the concept of stacking, pushing the idea of layers to the extreme. I’m also captivated by the use of repetition as a means of composition.”
Pozzi experimented with various forms to create the most extreme cantilevered round table. During the prototyping process he developed this shape that has the table’s axis offset from the center.

The goal was to challenge the structural stability of the table.

Stack 50 bridges traditional and contemporary aesthetic with a raw feel.

Depending on the beholder’s eye, the table resembles a tornado, a tree trunk, or a rock formation. Leaning. Shifting. “A structure that becomes art posing as a table.“

To construct and produce Stack 50, Pozzi naturally turned to his father and uncles with their extensive experience and their factory its skilled craftsmen and sophisticated machinery. Together they engineered and developed the table that is manufactured in Italy.  The design is patented in USA and Europe.
